Farmers’ and Producers’ Business Association of the Philippines, Incorporated. (FAPBAPI)

Description of the FAPBAPI project:

FAPBAPI has implemented a one-year (2001) micro-project called “Credit program for small Magsaysay rice farmers”. The project is located in Magsaysay, Sta. Rita Samar, 24 kilometers from Tacloban City, the commercial center of Eastern Visayas.

This micro-project consists of a financial assistance in term of rice production loans and includes the production of certified rice seeds. The project has 20 initial beneficiaries. It tries to help free the small rice farmers from borrowing money with exorbitant interest rates ranging from 50 to 100% per annum by the loan shark infesting on the poor farmers who have no recourse but to accept the terms and conditions dictated by the financiers.  The project produces and provides the farmer-beneficiaries with cheaper certified rice seeds and the needed fertilizers and chemicals bought directly in bulk from the suppliers in Tacloban City with lower prices than in the locality.

As a result, the project gives better employment and income for the farmer-beneficiaries thereby rice farming becomes more profitable to them.
