DISOP Philippines is a regional office of DISOP vzw/asbl, based in Brussels, Belgium. Since 1968 DISOP vzw has been officially recognized as an NGO by the Belgian government and the European Union, actively engaged in development aid in developing countries. At first, since 1961, DISOP efforts were directed at the integrated development of the South West region of the Parana State in Brazil. Hence the abbreviation DISOP stands for "Desenvolvimento Integral do Sud-Oeste do Parana." Through the years, however, DISOP has expanded its radius of action. That is why DISOP had to change the meaning of its acronym into "Organization for International Cooperation on Development Projects." Thus organizations in developing countries, whether in Africa, Asia, or Latin America, now can apply to DISOP for assistance. Basically DISOP will assist socio-economic or cultural projects. Priority, however, is given to those projects aiming at an integrated regional development, such as the establishment of micro, small or medium enterprises, micro-credits, cooperatives, initiatives in agriculture and forestry, etc... Currently DISOP has projects in more than twenty countries all over the world. As a matter of fact, DISOP does not limit itself to the so-called "developing countries" but also active in a number of Eastern European countries. The most important countries DISOP is operating nowadays are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Guatemala, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Poland, Romania, and South Africa. In order to be able to prepare the projects in an adequate way and follow-up their execution very closely, DISOP has different regional offices. For the Philippines and the entire region of South East Asia, the DISOP Office is in Tacloban City, Leyte. |
